Sulphur dioxide, a key air pollutant, has been seen declining by 1.81% in the first nine months of the year, the report said.
Chemical oxygen demand — a measure of water pollution — was also 0.28% lower, Zhou Shengxian, director of the State Environmental
Protection Administration, was quoted as saying.
Zhou credited this year’s reductions to a campaign to install more desulphurising facilities in coal-fired power plants, on which China
relies for about 70% of its electricity.
